Or context: mottos frayed like hessian,
Which speak of yesterday
And yesterday in tones more present than
The words which fall away.

Still the passive tongue that ebbs away
Into the towering gloom
Of solitude; it presses on the sense,
It shakes the air like blood within a room
Arcana of the evening spirals in
A double-helix way,
Malignant as a welt upon the skin;
The twilight looks away.

Some trick of distance pulls the far-away
Into the burning now;
Percussive flutters grieve the brittle jaw
In sympathy at how
Our limestone coasts submit to fickle tides,
More rough than we can say,
Besetting with disdain our crumbling sides
Until they drop away.

In age there will be time to drift away
From government and black
Sinews straining slowly at the skin,
To tread, uncertain, back
To hours of breakage, hours of desperate
Bids to underplay
The knowledge of the sense, imploring fate
To put the past away.
