lyrics

Tread not this way, O traveller
This silence hides a curse;
It drifts like smoke across the field,
Dour as a hearse.
What are these ghosts that linger on
The pale blue countryside?
The breathless wheeze of winter air;
The darkness of the tide.

What are these voices in the loam
That dim the afternoon?
A countless host of dilettantes
Made foolish by the moon.
Tread not this way, O traveller,
So mild in blood and bone;
Perdition rolls on rivers wide
Beneath old England's stone.

A public burning draws the crowd
Across the market square;
Dead skin and bone and cold-cracked lips
Are softly smoking there.
Lubricious boys collect around
The unremitting fire;
Each one conceives the other on
The raging funeral pyre.

Abandoned girls with eyes like glass
Sense earth upon their knees;
They move their hands in concord with
the shudder through the trees
So every squalid lover sings
Their desolate lament,
Where nothing clings to any word
And nothing true is meant.

Dreamless lovers hold their hopes
As fragile as a sigh
While over winter's weeping world
The silent stars go by.
Avowals move on sleepy eyes
Down every ancient street
And yearnings hover at the place
Where sea and harbour meet.

A footstep, hollow as the air,
Gives darkness weight and form;
It trails a hunger in it's wake
That mutters like a storm.
December moves with black intent
Beneath the voiceless sky;
Our tenderness seeks shelter there
As silent stars go by
